About James Smither

James Smither Jim grew up in Richmond, VA and began his painting career in 1993 after completing his studies at the University of Virginia, School of Architecture. Since that time he has traveled extensively around the world including Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and North America painting and designing places. Jim returned to Virginia in 2007 and set up his studio in Richmond. His focus is on capturing the spatial and atmospheric qualities of landscapes and exploring the interplay of built and natural forms. People are often studied in how they interact with places and others. Jim writes, “I like the medium of watercolor because of its unique ability to represent the presence of light in places. I like to work the full range of tonality - from light and medium transparent washes to rich colorful opaque darks. To create a since of unity I paint with a limited color palette. My subjects are based on on-site color and compositional studies. The final work is done in the studio where I work from photographs I have taken locally or abroad.”

Jim completes paintings by commission and is a practicing Landscape Architect, Urban Planner, and Urban Designer. Mr. Smither currently teaches illustration and design at the Virginia Commonwealth University and University of Richmond.
Jim’s academic credentials include a Master of Urban Design, University of Melbourne, Australia, 2005, a Master of Landscape Architecture, University of Virginia, 1993, and a Master of Urban and Regional Planning, the George Washington University, 1991.

• 1st Prize - Artworks, Richmond, VA - All Media Show, April 2013
Jurists Min Golub and Chuck Scalin wrote “If you’ve experienced working in watercolor, you already know it’s a difficult and unforgiving medium to master. Once the color is laid down on the paper, it’s almost impossible to make successful alterations or changes. It takes someone who is technically proficient and patient to control the transparent color washes throughout the composition and someone who has a very good sense of color and composition. This artist has it all! The two pieces we selected are both masterfully rendered with fine details and have a lovely muted color palette. Also, the presentation the artist selected is understated and does not distract from the imagery enclosed. It didn’t take long for us to determine that these 2 pieces would be our First Place Award for the Jefferson on Franklin and Boboli Gardens, Florence, Italy by Jim Smither.”
